Extending Devise SessionsController to authenticate using JSON

This is what finally worked.

class Api::V1::SessionsController < Devise::SessionsController  
  def create  
    respond_to do |format|  
      format.html { super }  
      format.json {  
        warden.authenticate!(:scope => resource_name, :recall => "#{controller_path}#new")  
        render :status => 200, :json => { :error => "Success" }  
      }  
    end  
  end  
  def destroy  
    super  
  end  
end

Also change routes.rb, remember the order is important.

devise_for :users, :controllers => { :sessions => "api/v1/sessions" }
devise_scope :user do
  namespace :api do
    namespace :v1 do
      resources :sessions, :only => [:create, :destroy]
    end
  end
end

resources :users
